This year I was able to go on a DWC/EMI road trip. I have heard about such trips, but this would be my first one to be a part of. As the days neared, so did my excitement! What would the hospitals be like? Would I get to meet all of the people I correspond with from the office? What will the towns be like? Will they be similar to the rural community I grew up in?

Unfortunately, I had not seen the movie, Bridges of Madison County, so I didn’t feel like I had the true appreciation of all we were about to see. As with Osceola, we were able to meet many people, like Marcia Hendricks, CEO, Connie Manny, Credentials and Executive Assistant, and many more. We toured the hospital and the new addition they are finishing. In Winterset, we had more time, so we were also able to take in some of the sights of the town, including three of the covered bridges and John Wayne’s birthplace.
The following morning we made our final stop of the trip in Chariton. We had a great time mingling with all of the staff and seeing their hospital. Veronica Fuhs, CEO, and Lori Johnson, Quality Services Director, were among the many we met. As with Winterset, we were able to spend some time in Chariton and were given a tour of the local Fire Station, including a ride in a fire truck and viewing “Old Betsy,” an 1883 Silsby Steamer Fire Engine. We finished the day with a tour of the HyVee Distribution Center.
As we drove home I was reflecting on everything we saw and did. The towns and communities are very similar to where I grew up. I love that everyone knows each other and are a part of one another’s lives. It seems a rare commodity to find and one that is very comforting to me.
I was amazed at the partnership between DOCS EMI and each hospital we are privileged to staff. The idea of locum tenens partnerships is one of a kind and seems to take a lot of communication and flexibility by everyone involved. It was an honor to meet the teams of providers, staff and administration at these three sites that make these partnerships happen.
